refugee women
SAO Association runs a day center for refugee women on Lesbos and in Athens. These centers are safe spaces where the women can find refuge, orientation and new perspectives. The work of the local specialists focuses on trauma-oriented, psychosocial support and guidance on the way to a new, self-determined life. In cooperation with partner organizations, SAO also gives the women access to medical and legal help.
food and jobs
The Hub Kos is a contact point for the more than 1000 refugees on the island of Kos. The Hub consists of a free shop, a community center, a help desk and a job program. Glocal Roots is the only active organization outside the camp on Kos. The 'Free Shop' supplies 300-500 refugees per month with food and hygiene items. Up to 600 people visit the community center every month and around 200 people benefit from the 'Help Desk' every month. In the summer (May to October) the Hub arranges 50-100 jobs for refugees and supports them in the integration process.
More projects?
If you know of another project that does good work and is worth supporting, then get in touch and we may add it to Nefeli after checking it out. In general, in the future we need to support other areas of life besides humanity. We need to think about the environment, health, education, etc. Promote your idea or the existing project to us at info@nefeli.ch with the subject line and receive the necessary financial resources.
entertainment and education
One Happy Family is probably one of the most popular projects. It is almost a small village in which the refugees can spend their time during the day. The organization, which has its headquarters in Switzerland, has set itself the goal of giving people back a bit of dignity and self-determination. Projects have been created at the request and initiative of the refugees. For example, a cinema, playground, sports field, yoga tent, internet café, gym, barber, women's room, etc. and are intended to make the time on the island a little more bearable. In addition, the lengthy waiting time is put to good use by providing school lessons.
sea rescue
Thousands of people drown every year while trying to flee across the Mediterranean (over 22,000 since 2014). SOS Méditerranée is deployed in the central Mediterranean with the rescue ship Ocean Viking to save people in distress at sea and to document the humanitarian crisis on site. They fulfill the moral and legal obligation to provide assistance at sea. SOS Méditerranée has been able to save the lives of 33,000 people since 2016. In addition to France, Germany and Italy, they also have an association headquarters in Switzerland.
