Humanity

The first division is all about solidarity with the refugees in the Mediterranean. The projects selected below are regularly checked and selected separately. In addition to transparency, they must also be popular with the refugees.

There is a personal and friendly relationship with all projects. Smaller organizations were chosen by purpose because the need the money the most.

Women Refugees

SAO Association

SAO Association runs a day center for refugee women on Lesvos and in Athens. In these centers there are shelters where the women find refuge, orientation and new perspectives. The work of the local professionals focuses on trauma-oriented, psychosocial support and accompaniment on the way to a new, self-determined life. In cooperation with partner organizations, SAO also gives the women access to medical and legal help.

Entertainment and Education

One happy family

One Happy Family is probably one of the most popular projects. It is an almost small village in which the refugees can spend their time during the day.  The organization with headquarters in Switzerland has   set itself the goal of giving people back a piece of dignity and self-determination. Projects were created at the request and initiative of the refugees. For example, cinema, playground, sports field, yoga tent, internet café, gym, barber etc. and are intended to make the time on the island a little more bearable. In addition, the lengthy waiting time is used sensibly by school lessons.

Food and Jobs

The Hub Kos is a contact point for the more than 1000 refugees on the island of Kos. The hub consists of a free shop, a community center, a help desk and a job program. Glocal Roots is the only active organization outside of the Kos camp. Through the 'Free Shop', 300-500 refugees are supplied with food and hygiene items per month. Up to 600 people visit the Community Center every month and around 200 people benefit from the 'Help Desk' every month. In the summertime (May to October) the hub arranges 50-100 jobs for refugees and supports them in the integration process.

Sea Rescue

SOS Méditerranée

Thousands of people drown every year trying to escape across the Mediterranean (over 22,000 since 2014). SOS Méditerranée is on duty with the rescue ship Ocean Viking in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress and to document the humanitarian crisis on the ground. They meet the moral as well as the legal obligation to provide assistance at sea. SOS Méditerranée has saved the lives of 33,000 people since 2016. In addition to France, Germany and Italy, they also have an association headquarter in Switzerland.
